An ordinary typewriter can furnish the basis for many simple substitution ciphers, For instance, instead of hitting the proper key for each letter, hit the key immediately above it and to the left. Or if you prefer, use the key immediately to the right, or the key above and to the right.

To make the code harder to crack, you can adopt such stratagems as alternating the two methods just explained, starting with above and left:
